With the exception of the actual beetle images, all pictures on this site are taken at our property near Estes Park, Colorado. It is our pride and joy - our sanctuary.
We, personally, have chosen Verbenone above all other products to protect our own precious trees and the fantastic wildlife that depend on them.
Verbenone and how it works.
Beetles and other insects communicate using pheromones. Verbenone – a synthetic pheromone treatment for high value pine trees – replicates the beetle pheromone, sending a message that the tree is full and that the food supply is insufficient for additional beetles. Arriving beetles receive the ‘message’ that they should look elsewhere for a suitable host.

Verbenone helps control:
Mountain Pine Beetle - Dendractonus ponderosae
Pine Engraver - Ips pini (only partial control)
Northern Spruce Engraver - Ips perturbatus (only partial control)
California Five-spined Ips - Ips paraconfusus (only partial control)
And can be used on:
Lodgepole Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Whitebark Pine, Western White Pine, Southwestern White Pine, Limber Pine, Other pines susceptible to Mountain Pine Beetles.
Does Verbenone really work?
Verbenone has been used as part of integrated pest management programs (IPM) for more than a decade. Many studies show that areas treated with Verbenone, as part of an IPM program, fare significantly better than those that are not.

How safe is Verbenone?
By Federal Law, Verbonone is licensed and approved by PMRA guidelines as a pesticide. But, Verbenone is environmentally safe and non-toxic to humans, pets, birds, and even the beetles themselves. Always follow the instructions provided.

BeetleBlock pouches have a different color top strip each year so that you can tell if a tree is newly protected. This is very important for large users who may have many different applicators, crossing each other's territory.

How to use Contech Verbenone:
For Mountain Pine Beetles, it is our recommendaton that you staple or nail the first Verbenone pouch 7 - 10 feet high (2m) on the north face of the tree just prior to beetle flight season (April to Aug, depending upon location). Attach the second pouch just prior to PEAK flight (usually July - August in the northern Rockies). If late in the season, use the second pouch for a second tree.

* How to use BeetleBlock Verbenone:
For Mountain Pine Beetles, recommended one application. Nail the BeetleBlock pouch 7 - 10 feet high (2m) on the north face of the tree just prior to beetle flight season (apply June 1 to July 15 in Mountain States).
In a study produced by the USDA Forerst Service in Missoula Montana in 2007, it was found that the effeciveness longevity for BeetleBlock Verbenone was higher and longer than the Contech Verbenone. Between May 19 and September 2007 at a mean temperature between 75.4 and 76.8 degrees, the BeetleBlock pouches lasted 103 days in sun and 131 days in shade while the Contech product only lasted approximately 75 days.. This duration of effectiveness probably accounts for Contech's instructions to treat the trees twice between April and September while BeetleBlock recommends only one application between end May and mid June just prior to peak flight time.
For protecting stands of trees, use at least one verbenone pouch every 25 feet in a perimeter surrounding the stand. Also place a Verbenone pouch on the North side of the largest tree. By encircling the stand and boosting the repellent on the most desirable tree, the pouches can be used in more economical fashion and may help to protect more than the one tree per pouch.
If your trees may be attacked from unattended neighboring property, try to create a Verbenone barrier on trees on the windward side of your trees (as described above) in a perimeter no more than 25 feet apart and boosting the protection on your largest trees.
If used for Ips Beetles, the season is longer, as two to four generations of these beetles usually develop per year. Verbenone is only partially effective against ips beetles. The best combination treatment for ips pini is a combination of verbenone and ipsenol. However, no commercially developed application combination has been developed at this time.
Overwintering ips beetles begin emerging in spring as soon as daytime temperatures consistently reach 50 F to 60 F. However, timing can be difficult to determine since ips beetles can have multiple, overlapping generations and life cycles. Use earlier and repeatedly through October.) The ABSOLUTE best practice to prevent ips beetles is to remove all slash (which attracts ips beetles) immediately.
